SiM Mining Consultants was formed in 2001 to serve mainly deep level gold and intermediate level platinum mines operating in hard-rock environments. We focus on objectively advising mines exposed to seismic hazard and risk.

Our area of expertise includes the optimisation of rockburst risk management using all available strategies, from optimal monitoring to incident analysis and training of mine personnel. Mine seismology training for rock engineers and production management generally improves knowledge of the causes of mining induced seismicity.

SiM Mining Consultants was formed in 2001 to serve mainly deep level gold and intermediate level platinum mines operating in hard-rock environments. We focus on objectively advising mines exposed to seismic hazard and risk.

Our area of expertise includes the optimisation of rockburst risk management using all available strategies, from optimal monitoring to incident analysis and training of mine personnel. Mine seismology training for rock engineers and production management generally improves knowledge of the causes of mining induced seismicity.

Based on past experience, losses may be significantly reduced through better understanding of locally prevalent seismic sources, their failure and damage mechanisms and through an awareness of the rockburst scenarios that typically lead to safety risk and operational losses.

The optimisation of seismic network operation raises efficiency and increases return on investment while the continued assessment of mining strategies in terms of 'best practice' systematically eliminates hazardous conditions.

Due to the shortage of experienced mine seismologists in South Africa, SiM enters into co-operation agreements with other consultancies in the geo-technical field in order to offer optimal service solutions tailored to the needs of its clients.

Generic Task List

Seismic Hazard Quantification - Evaluation of seismic response wrt. mining layout and rate of production; determination of principal emission sources; identification of mining configurations prone to failure; quantification of geo-seismic hazard; rockburst risk to service excavations; estimates of Mmax and event recurrence rates; identification of probable locations of major failures; comparative seismic hazard assessment of working areas.

Reduction of Seismicity Related Losses - Rockburst site investigation; analysis of rock mass failure and damage mechanisms for support system design; description of mine-specific rockburst scenarios for accurate loss quantification & contingency planning.

Seismic System Management - Seismic monitoring objectives and network design; seismic system management; audits of seismic systems and their operation; drafting of policies and procedures for the management of seismic hazard; quantification of success rates for instability analyses; compilation of the seismic section of rock related CoP in compliance with DMR guidelines.

Applied mine seismology research – SiM is a past and current research collaborator in projects funded by the Mine Health and Safety Council.

Training in applied mine seismology – Short courses and detailed training programmes are available depending on need; courses are customised and include practicals, exercises and assignments. Presentation venues and schedules are flexible.
